If you have been involved in an accident, stop the vehicle and move to a safe area.

1. Stop the vehicle immediately and call 911.

Move to a safe area away from traffic if you are able to. Turn on hazard flasher lights, shift into park, and set the emergency brakes. Make sure it is safe before opening your car door.

Try your best to keep calm and evaluate the situation, and then call 911 speaking clearly so you are understood.

Be prepared to give the following information:

  • The location where the response is needed, including the street name, the nearest intersection, or a business name near the accident

  • If medical attention is needed

  • An account of what happened during the accident

  • The number of vehicles and people involved in the accident

  • The type of vehicles involved in the accident, including car make, model and other identifying information

2. Check if all parties involved are safe.

If you are physically safe, check for danger or injury on all parties involved. Do not move the bodies or vehicles unnecessarily. If the parties involved are safe, exchange information with them including their:

  • Full name

  • Address

  • Contact Number

  • License Plate Number

  • Name of the Insurance Company

3. Gather evidence as much as possible

Secure your equipment and cargo to prevent further damage. Take clear and bright photos of all four sides of your vehicle. Even if the accident did not result in visible damage, we still request photos of your entire vehicle. We need this information to determine if the vehicle is still safe to operate.

Additionally, take pictures of the surrounding areas, especially if property is damaged. Take note of the name and badge number of any responding police officers, the name of the specific department or municipality they work for, and who to contact for a copy of the police report.

4. Report the accident to us and your insurance provider

You are required to file a police report if the accident resulted in injury or death. In addition, call your insurance provider, even if you are not making a claim.
